Trump Sues California Over Sanctuary Laws

The Trump Administration took it upon themselves on the 6th of March to file a lawsuit against California over their sanctuary laws. There are at least 3 laws that are being taken into account, with Trump claiming that the laws undermine federal immigration policy.

Sanctuary Cities are cities in certain states that refuse to enforce immigration policies regarding illegal immigrants. This has to do with the idea that deporting people who did not arrive through the immigration process is immoral.

AttorneyGeneral Jeff Sessions announced the lawsuit on Wednesday, which would crack down on illegal immigration, and potentially hold mayors who refuse to abide by the federal government accountable for denouncing the law.

Just recently, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf was criticized for when she warned the population to raids by the federal government in the area. The federal government is now investigating her to possible obstruction of justice.

“I remain confident that my actions were both legal and moral,” Schaaf said. “I find it difficult to believe even in today’s America that informing people of their legal rights could be considered illegal.”

However, a case can easily be made that Schaaf telling people of an immigration raid prevents the ICE from doing their job, and as a result is indeed obstruction of justice.

Governor Jerry Brown was dismayed at Jeff Session’s plan to sue California. He took to Twitter to state “At a time of unprecedented political turmoil, Jeff Sessions has come to California to further divide and polarize America. Jeff, these political stunts may be the norm in Washington, but they don’t work here. SAD!!!”

Sessions responded to the claims when he released his lawsuit, stating:

“Stop treating immigration agents differently from everybody else for the purpose of eviscerating border and immigration laws and advancing an open borders philosophy shared by only a few, the most radical extremists,”

Schaaf also got the short end of the stick, “Her actions support those who flout our laws and boldly validates illegality,” Sessions said. “There’s no other way to interpret those remarks… So here’s my message to Mayor Schaaf: How dare you? How dare you needlessly endanger the lives of law enforcement to promote an open borders agenda.”

The crackdown is underway as Sessions and the Trump administration is suing many members of California for openly justifying breaking the law. We will see how this plays out in the coming months, but it is well known that the results of the case will be huge, and will impact immigration policy forever.

“We are going to fight these irrational, unfair, unconstitutional policies that have been imposed on you and your officers or our federal officers. … And we intend to win this fight.” Sessions finished.
